Heathfield’s most noted feature is the Gibraltar Tower. This tower was built in honour of General Sir George Augustus Elliot who successfully defended 'the Rock' against the French and Spanish between 1779 and 1783.

Between the 1600 and the 1800's the Fuller family, ran an iron furnace at Heathfield which produced cannons for the Royal Navy and brought prosperity to the town. The small market town is now prosperous for its hairdressing salons.
